episode 80 :: money meal
Posted by Phil on July 1st, 2011
Last month, I posted a question to the My Life as a Foodie Facebook group. I asked for your “money meal.” Name the one meal that you could make in your sleep – your go to dish when you have to make something. It’s the one meal you can make without looking at a recipe anymore, something you can make in a pinch (with an obviously required amount of prep time). Anyone who cooks has one. What’s yours?
We received a lot of responses and I’m sharing them on today’s show. And if you missed out on this bit of audience participation, perhaps it’s time you joined the My Life as a Foodie Facebook Group. Membership is embarrassingly low, and I’m growing a complex over it. Hook a brother up.
In this episode:
• Nathan’s Hot Dog Eating Contest is still going strong, unfortunately
• 2009 Axel des Vignes Bordeaux Blanc
• Your money meals
• My money meal
• Ludo Bites America comes to the Sundance Channel July 19th
• Food Trucks have lost their charm for me
• Bizarre foods have too
Don’t forget to post your favorite “Money Meal” recipes in the comments section. Look for a new “Money Meals” page in the top menu soon.

I watched the hot dog eating competition with Lushie and the kids. her words “that’s the most disgusting f’n thing I’ve ever seen and I gave birth”. I watched it cuz I do every year. I’m a sucker for stupid TV yet I wont do Jersey Shore.
I haven’t made my beercan chicken in awhile so I may have to this weekend. I would love to see the collection of others that you read. Would make a cool facebook gallery if everyone submits a photo.
Sorry I didn’t get my money meal in before the show. I wasn’t really sure what it would be but then it came to me: roast chicken. Stuff cavity under skin with lemons, garlic, rosemary or whatever else is around.
Great to hear what everyone else came up with. Love the idea of a recipe section on MLaaF. Those over-eating/gluttony contests are disgusting! Just like “wrestling” which I also don’t watch. People are starving and these assholes have to gorge themselves to the point of getting sick?! WTF??!!
Cabbage and Spaezle and Kielbasa Spaezle: If you can buy, follow directions To make…easy:
1 cup flour
2 eggs
salt
pepper
NUTMEG
2Tbspn butter
1/4c milk
Boil water with some chicken stock and Grate the above dough through the lg holes of cheese grater over water. 8-10min boil drain, saute with…
Slice sausage into coins and brown, We like the hungarian, spicy paparika version, remove but keep drippings to saute and steam chopped head of cabbage and one onion. When reduced, add spaetzle, sausage, a large dollop of sour cream, more salt and pepper to taste.
The longer it sits, the better it gets. LOVE IT. Seriously, even making the noodles, less than 30min to bring to eat. Leftovers rock too.
This is my recipe for 1 package of ahi sashimi grade tuna from Trader Joe’s (about 1lb). Double it for 2lb of tuna, of course. LOL
1lb tuna diced (chopped into small squares)
1/2 chopped green onions
1/2 cup soy sauce
1 tablespoon toasted sesame oil
1/2 tablespoon toasted sesame seeds
1/2 tablespoon crushed red pepper flakes
1 tablespoon chopped macadamia nuts
Chili Sesame Oil as many shakes of the bottle as you like for a spicy touch
Combine all ingredients, mix well, let sit 1/2 hour or longer. The longer it sits, the more intense the flavor. And you can add to or lessen ingredients to taste. If you like super spicy, add more chili flakes and chili sesame oil.
