episode 69 :: wild alaska fish taco recipe contest w/chef susan feniger

This week, Chef Susan Feniger calls into the show to share her thoughts on an exciting contest she’s involved in with Alaska Seafood. Now through January 31st, you can enter your own recipe for the ultimate fish taco at alaskafishtaco.com.

Creativity is a must, balance is key, and you absolutely have to use at least one species of Wild Alaska Seafood in your dish. That last part is a no-brainer. Wild Alaska Seafood is delicious and, most importantly, sustainable.

Wild Alaska Seafood is readily available in stores such as Whole Foods, Wild Oats, etc. Look for it in the frozen section of your local markets.

Along with her tips on making the ultimate fish taco, Susan shares her thoughts on sustainable seafood, the future of our oceans, her involvement with the Monterey Bay Aquarium (along with her restaurant partner and co-host of Food Network’s “Too Hot Tamales”, Mary Sue Milliken), her experience on Top Chef Masters, and says there’s one thing you can never have too much of — beer.

I love this woman.

Visit alaskafishtaco.com for all the details on the recipe contest and get your recipe in before January 31st.

Also visit Susan’s charity, The Scleroderma Research Foundation. Susan raised $32,500 for the foundation on Top Chef Masters last year, having lost her friend to the disease.

  1. Such a great interview with Susan Feniger — it was great to hear her one-on-one with you as I’ve been a longtime fan. The subject of seafood and sustainability is just to important to disregard or be cavalier about so this contest is a great way to raise more awareness. Nice job interviewing too. (And thanks for those opening Rose Parade giggles – I thought maybe you’d made that up but no!)

  2. Thanks Charles. I appreciate that, my friend. She was just the person I needed to start my year off right. I’ve always held her in high regard, and her appearance on Top Chef Masters showed just what a professional chef is supposed to be. She’s a fantastic person from the inside, which shows in her compassion for the sea, as well as her friends.

I have a big year planned, but if 2011 doesn’t get any better than this it won’t matter. Don’t forget to enter the contest!

Also, I just checked the statistics on this episode and it’s breaking all records for downloads after being up only a few days. At this rate, this will beat the previous highest rated show by almost double.

  3. Love listening to Susan Feniger on your show today, Phil. She is a true legend on Food Network and with all of her experience it’s not a question that she deserves to be called a Top Chef Master.

I will look for the Alaskan Fish in our Whole Foods this weekend and see what I can come up with. The idea of a contest is a really good way of getting the creative juices flowing in the kitchen.

  4. I’m so excited about Susans fish taco contest. I’ve tried to submit 2 different recipes several times, but nothing happens when I click on submit. Any ideas?

  5. Great show, Phil. You really kicked it up a notch having a legendary chef like Susan on this time around. Really loved the things she had to say about sustainable seafood too. I see more an more “wild caught” or “sustainable” labels at our local seafood market, so it is having a great impact.

Keep up the great work. Love the new site design.

  6. I loved Two Hot Tamales! It’s sad Food Network doesn’t have shows like that anymore.
